HEALTH Re-Opens Third Beach, Two Others Closed

HEALTH officials recommend re-opening Third Beach in Middletown for swimming. Peabody's Beach in Middletown remains closed.  This recommendation is based on results from water samples that show bacteria levels within acceptable limits. HEALTH will continue to monitor the water quality regularly to assure safe bathing throughout the summer season. HEALTH also recommends the closure of Gooseberry Beach in Newport to swimming due to high bacteria counts. Officials will continue to monitor the water quality and recommend re-opening when the areas are safe for swimming. Water quality analysis is conducted by the HEALTH laboratory or a state certified laboratory.

Beach Openings   HEALTH officials recommended re-opening Third Beach in Middletown, King's Park Beach in Newport, and Grinnell’s Beach in Tiverton for swimming. New Beach Monitoring System

The state Department of Health offers new ways to check water quality, beach closures just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

  The following from a press release on the Department of Health website and from the new beach advisory site.  With all beaches set to open this Saturday, May 26, the Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH) has announced new tools to promote public health and safety during beach season. These include new Web pages featuring an interactive water quality map, as well as a public awareness campaign on responsible pet ownership. At www.health.ri.gov/beaches, beachgoers can view current beach closures and advisories, as well as use an interactive map to view water sampling data and other information for any beach in the state. RI Climate Change Experts Say Local Sea Level Continues to Rise

The URI Climate Change Collaborative says evidence is overwhelming that the climate is changing.

Although you don’t hear many complaints about this year’s warm winter, local experts say the shifts in the climate should not be underestimated. According to the University of Rhode Island Climate Change Collaborative, the world is getting warmer, the oceans are getting warmer and more acidic, storms are getting more intense and sea levels are rising at an accelerated rate.   According to the study funded by the Rhode Island Sea Grant, the sea level in Newport has increased eight inches since 1930. By 2100, the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council said to expect three to five feet of sea level rise. This could mean loss of waterfront property and public access, said the university. Department of Health Recommends Closing Third Beach and Atlantic Beach

The Rhode Island Department of Health recommended the beach closures Tuesday afternoon due to high bacteria levels.

The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday recommended the closure of Third Beach and Atlantic Beach in Middletown. Officials warned against swimming at those beaches due to high bacteria levels. In the same statement, DOH officials announced that Easton's Beach in Newport would reopen after bacteria levels there were found to be within safe levels for humans. The closures do not affect any other beaches on Third Beach Road. Peabody's Beach remains open as safe for swimming based on recent water samples taken. Atlantic Beach Closed to Swimming

The Rhode Island Department of Health recommended closing Atlantic Beach Tuesday afternoon around 4 p.m.

The Rhode Island Department of Health (DOH) recommended the temporary closure of Atlantic Beach Tuesday afternoon to swimming and other activities due to high bacteria levels in the water. The closure was the second this year for Atlantic Beach, according to the DOH website. The recommendation was made based on results from water samples that showed high bacteria levels. The health department will continue to monitor the water quality regularly to assure safe bathing throughout the summer season, officials stated in an announcement. All Middletown Beaches Open for Swimming

The state Department of Health lifted its recommended closures for two beaches on Sunday.

Third and Peabody beaches in Middletown were reopened on Sunday after the state Department of Health cleared bacteria levels as within safe limits again for swimming. Last week, four local beaches were closed after heavy rains flushed stormwater pollutants into swimming areas. Atlantic Beach in Middletown and Easton's Beach in Newport reopened Saturday.
