Middletown vs. Portsmouth Fire Departments Blood Drive Competition

Portsmouth and Middletown fire departments will hold life saving blood drives this Friday

Middletown might had been defeated to Portsmouth in the recent Little League District Championship, but residents have a second chance at some friendly community competition this week.  This Friday, July 20, Portsmouth and Middletown fire departments will hold life saving blood drives from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.  The event is open to the public.  In the first annual community blood drive competition held last year, Middletown edged out Portsmouth by collecting 17 pints of blood, just one more than Portsmouth. Together, the 33 pints collected potentially saved nearly 100 lives. Tuesday: Local Author Book Series Launch at Island Books

A look at what's happening in and around Middletown today.

Barnes & Noble will host Storytime with Miss Lynn featuring “You” by Stephen Michael King at 10:30 a.m. An accompanying craft will follow. Local author Ann Hood will launch her book tour for her new children's book series, The Treasure Chest, featuring eight books that are set in Newport at Island Books beginning at 4:30 p.m. today. The books are geared towards children ages 9-12 and follow the stories of twins who have recently moved from New York City into an attic apartment of a Newport mansion where they discover their great-grandfather's hidden study and its power of time travel that takes them back to a different era in each book. RI Blood Center Honors Salve Regina for 32 Years of Saving Lives

The Rhode Island Blood Center recently honored Salve Regina University for more than three decades of hosting blood drives, collecting more than 7,600 pints since its first blood drive in September 1979.

We're passing along the following news from the Rhode Island Blood Center... Salve Regina was among a number of Rhode Island companies, schools and organizations that hosted blood drives in 1979, the year the Rhode Island Blood Center was founded by the hospitals in the state. At the “Appreciations Celebration,” hosted by the Blood Center at Salve Regina’s Ochre Court, blood donors and individuals who have registered with the national bone marrow registry, Be The Match, were also honored. Salve Regina is among a network of colleges, universities, and high schools statewide that regularly host blood drives, and account for more than 13 percent of the Rhode Island Blood Center’s annual blood collections. Who Will Give Most Blood This Friday? Middletown or Portsmouth Firefighters?

The Middletown and Portsmouth fire departments will hold simultaneous blood drives that will be open to the public on Friday, July 15 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at both fire houses.

A friendly competition between two Aquidneck Island fire departments promises to bring hope to several Rhode Islanders and their families this week. The Portsmouth and Middletown Fire Departments each have scheduled blood drives for Friday, July 15 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at their respective fire houses at 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown and 2300 East Main Road, Portsmouth, according to an announcement from the Rhode Island Blood Center.
