Road Closure Hampers Coastal Cleanup

The International Coastal Cleanup at the Norman Bird Sanctuary section of Third Beach was hindered by road closings, but a few dedicated volunteers got through to do their part.

A group of ten dedicated volunteers sat in traffic for over an hour Saturday to get to the Norman Bird Sanctuary to help with the 25th Annual International Coastal Cleanup at Third Beach. The event, sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy, was part of the world's largest volunteer effort to clean up the marine environment. Similar events were held all over Aquidneck Island, in conjunction with clean-ups taking place across the nation and around the world. Twenty-five people had pre-registered to help with the event, scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., but Norman Bird Sanctuary officials said they were unaware and had not been notified that Third Beach Road, where they are located, would be closed until 10 a.m. as part of the race …
