DiPalma: Real-Time Data Could Help Reduce DMV Wait Times

Sen. DiPalma, who serves as the Chair of the Commission to Study the Division of Motor Vehicles, says providing real-time information about DMV wait times could help people avoid long lines.

Information is the key to cutting down on waiting times at the Division of Motor Vehicles, according to a Senate commission that today issued recommendations on ways to improve service there. The Special Senate Commission to Study the Division of Motor Vehicles, which has been studying the DMV since late 2011, made several recommendations today, including one that the division post current waiting times for its Cranston headquarters and all its branches on its website to help customers plan for or avoid long lines. “While there have been significant improvements in recent years at the DMV – the average wait is now down to about 30 minutes – there are still opportunities for more. Giving people current, real-time information about how and …

New Middletown DMV Branch Clears Zoning Hurdle to Open in November

The Middletown Zoning Board of Review on Tuesday night granted a variance to allow for 16 additional parking spaces for the new permanent DMV branch, to be located about a block from the former Valley Road location.

A vote of approval from the Middletown Zoning Board of Review on Tuesday night has paved the way for the state Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to set up a new permanent branch in Middletown with a five-year lease. The new DMV branch will move into the shopping plaza at the corner of East Main and Valley roads, into the space currently occupied by the Piano Gallery of Rhode Island. To accommodate the extra traffic and business, landlord and property owner Kenneth Alves plans to turn the vacant lot next door on Valley Road into a parking lot. The customer’s entrance to the DMV will be located on the west or backside of the shopping plaza, while the employees’ entrance will be located within the shopping plaza itself, he said. In a unanimous…

Middletown AAA Club Branch Sees Traffic Double Since DMV Closure

A spokesman said members requesting DMV services and new memberships have significantly increased since the Middletown DMV branch closed Feb. 11.

Business has been booming at the nearby AAA Auto Club office on East Main Road since the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Middletown branch office closed in February. “We’re seeing our business almost double in the last three weeks, especially in the last two weeks,” said Lloyd Albert, spokesperson for the Rhode Island AAA Southern New England branches. “Looking at our numbers, we have literally doubled what we were doing in December and January. We are up by 100 percent for that one location.” The Middletown DMV branch closed Feb. 11. The state of Rhode Island is continuing to accept proposals from property owners and brokers for potential new sites on Aquidneck Island, while reaching out to property owners directly. In the week ending …

Paiva Weed to Chafee: Aquidneck Island DMV Needs to Be Reopened Immediately

Meanwhile, Aquidneck Island's Senate delegation is pressing Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s administration to restore DMV services on the island immediately.

Rhode Island State Sen. President M. Teresa Paiva Weed has called on Gov.  Lincoln Chafee’s administration to restore Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) services on Aquidneck Island immediately, according to a Senate news release issued Friday. No property bids for alternate Aquidneck Island DMV location prospects were submitted to the state by Thursday’s 11 a.m. deadline for requests for proposals (RFPs), according to the senator's prepared statement. Since last summer, this was the second RFP round that drew no proposals for a new Aquidneck Island DMV. The RFP guidelines had sought proposals for a 5,000 square foot space with a minimum of 85 parking spaces. The DMV branch in Middletown closed Friday, Feb. 11, the day its lease expired,  …

Middletown DMV's Final Days Bring Out Long Lines, Concerns

The Middletown DMV branch closes at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The state is currently looking for another suitable location in the area.

Hurry up and wait. That was a common sentiment among customers who sat patiently and waited Thursday afternoon at the Middletown branch of the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV)—many for two or more hours. Some came for a car registration or other DMV business on their to-do list and hoped to squeeze in the errand now to avoid the time-consuming drive off the island beginning Monday. Newport County's only DMV branch on Valley Road in Middletown will close Friday at 3:30 p.m. and it remains unclear when another location will reopen on Aquidneck Island. A sign inside the DMV Middletown Branch said that another location would be opening in the area "later this year." Some customers who heard about the DMV closure raised doubts about whether the…

Middletown DMV to Close Friday

The state says the closure is temporary as the Division of Motor Vehicles looks for an alternative location in Middletown.

The Middletown branch of the state’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will close at the end of day on Friday. Rhode Island DMV Administrator Sally Strachan on Monday announced the closure in a press release, stating that the disruption of services will be temporary as the DMV seeks an alternate site. The Middletown branch is closing on Feb. 11 due to the completion of its lease, Strachan stated. “The building they're in is too big," State Senator Lou DiPalma told Patch. “It used to house the Department of Labor and Training branch too, but now it’s just been the DMV and they don’t need all that space anymore.” He and other local area lawmakers have been working to ensure that the local DMV branch stays on Aquidneck Island, specifically in …
