Why You May Not Have Felt the Earthquake

The Oct. 16 earthquake was felt by some, but not others.

Are you wondering why you didn't feel the Oct. 16 earthquake? The earthquake was felt by some people in Rhode Island but not by others, even in the same town. Earthquake shaking tends to be amplified in areas where there are soft soil conditions, according John Ebel, the director of the Weston Observatory, which studies and monitors earthquakes. If you live near a landfill, you will likely feel shaking more strongly than if you live on rock formations, Ebel said. Also, some buildings have a stronger tendency to shake more than others, Ebel said. For example, some residents near the Virginia earthquake in 2011 felt the tremors, while others did not, he said. Ebel spoke to Patch in the wake of the earthquake, after Twitter and Facebook lit…

Total B.S, I live 2 blocks from a landfill and felt absolutely nothing, although my neighbors claimed they did. ALSO, lets not forget the epicenter was over 200 miles away in Maine so by the time it was felt in Rhode Island its ripples were nothing more than a buzz! All this baloney of if you noticed the earthquake is pretty much if you had good attention or not.   more ›

Residents With Special Needs Can Register for Emergency Assistance

Middletown's Emergency Management Team posted the letter below on the town website this week, as Virginia recovers from a rare earthquake and Hurricane Irene heads our way.

A rare and strong earthquake in Virginia on Tuesday and a powerful hurricane on the way have pushed emergency preparedness to the fore in Middletown this week. On Tuesday, the Town of Middletown website posted a form to encourage anyone with special needs to register online through the state Department of Health website. As Hurricane Irene gains strength in the Bahamas and moves north, with landfall in Middletown likely by Sunday, local emergency management officials are encouraging the community to help make sure all Middletown residents are properly prepared for natural disasters. Regardless of age or abilities, local and state emergency management officials are recommending that all individuals with chronic health conditions, …

RIDOT, Turnpike Authority Inspecting Bridges Following 5.9 Earthquake

The Mount Hope, Sakonnet River and Pell bridges were inspected Tuesday evening following the 5.9 earthquake felt along the East Coast.

Rhode Island engineers and transportation officials were inspecting Portsmouth and Newport's main spans following the 5.9 earthquake that shook up the East Coast Tuesday afternoon.  Sakonnet River Bridge Rhode Island Department of Transportation (DOT) spokesman Charles St. Martin says the DOT is inspecting all of the state's projects, including the Sakonnet River Bridge.  "We are checking all of our projects," St. Martin said. St. Martin said he doesn't expect engineers and inspectors to find problems "given the minor magnitude of the earthquake."  "At this minute (4 p.m.), we haven't found anything," he said. "We don't expect any problems."  Inspectors checked the Sakonnet River Bridge project, late this afternoon. The Sakonnet River …

The 6.0 magnitude earthquake that happened shortly before 2 p.m. today could be felt along much of the East Coast. Did you feel any swaying today?

People across the eastern seaboard felt the ground sway under their feet today after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Virginia near the D.C. area.
