The family of the late Terry Chiodo, a Portsmouth woman who was fatally stabbed early Wednesday morning shortly after boarding a RIPTA bus, released the following statement. The victim's estranged husband, Christopher James, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death. The Texas family of Terry Chiodo wish to thank the heroes who grabbed the animal who murdered our family; on the bus, who risked their lives to apprehend that murderer. You will be hailed in Texas and by us as heroes; who do not stand by and witness assaults on women in public, and in private. The following is from a statement issued by the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence regarding Wednesday's fatal stabbing on a RIPTA bus. First and foremost, our hearts go out to the family, friends and community of Terry L. Chiodo. While her death marks the first murder to occur in Portsmouth in a decade and Rhode Island’s first domestic violence murder in 2013, it is also a stark reminder that we have a long way to go to achieve a Rhode Island that is free of domestic violence. Even in a community that is known for its safety, domestic violence does happen behind closed doors every day by abusers who seek to control their partners—murder is often their final act of abuse. Updated at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday A Providence man, arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly stabbing a Portsmouth woman on a Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) bus, was arraigned this afternoon in Second District Court.
