In anticipation of statewide Fourth of July celebrations this weekend, Patch provides a briefing of Rhode Island’s fireworks law.

Without a doubt, one of the first things people associate with the Fourth of July are fireworks. Uncle Sam and the red, white, and blue color combination aside, fireworks have become an American tradition for the summer holiday. 2011 will mark the first full year of legal consumer fireworks sales in Rhode Island. Sparklers and other varieties of firecrackers available for purchase in hawkers' tents, local supermarkets, and other shops. But before you set one off, there are a few updated laws of which you should be aware. In Middletown, local police are not permitting the use of any type of fireworks on town-owned properties, including public beaches. Bumper to Bumper: Avoiding Fourth of July Traffic

Prior to the public release of a large-scale traffic study, the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission provides tips for roads to avoid during the Fourth of July festivities.

Newport's county-wide traffic jams during the Fourth of July are not just speculation. Due to the influx of tourists, traffic does actually increase, according to Tina Dolen, executive director of the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission. The traffic situation was at its worst four years ago when, in addition to the normal increase of tourists, a cruise ship docked in the harbor, causing several more cars than expected. Since that gridlock, however, traffic during the holiday has been improving. "The police department and other city officials have done a terrific job of managing the traffic, even though there is more traffic every year," Dolen said.
