In partnership with NewportFilm, many community organizations help bring BULLY to the Jane Pickens theatre to rally administrators, teachers and parents together on this very serious subject.
Last week, NewportFilm, in partnership with community organizations, rallied administrators, teachers and parents together on the subject of bullying. They took the opportunity to raise the serious subject to the people who can make difference, while at the same time advocating for the service that their organization has to offer to the public and its schools. Camilla Gold, Portsmouth High School student, who originally hails from California, commented to the audience during the panel discussion. "I wish I saw the teachers and people who see bullying and let it happen here," said Gold. "I think this would be eye-opening for them." Some would say this statement is out of the mouthes of babes but for the packed house of administrators, …

Over 200 moms, dads, grandparents, teachers, 4th graders and their siblings came out in force on a rainy Friday night to enjoy a meal together and dance the evening away. Gaudet students and families, take a look at what's new . . .
With a little over a week to go before the start of school in Middletown, here are some reminders for students and families attending Gaudet: Please be mindful of the following pick up and drop off policies at the start of the year: 1) All drop-offs and pick-ups are in the back parking lot (Turner Rd. entrance and exit). This includes the first day of school. 2) When dropping off, the lead car should pull all the way up to the stop sign. Students in cars that are stopped next to the sidewalk, need to exit so we can maximize the number of cars dropping off at any given moment. Middletown High Assistant Football Coach Dustin Almeida says he he knew from a young age that he wanted to become a coach.
Dustin Almeida has wanted to be a coach ever since he was a student himself. “I knew it from jump street.” said Almeida, who is assistant football coach for Middletown High School and a teacher at Gaudet Middle. His resume proves it. Almeida started coaching Middletown students when he was in high school. He served as the assistant coach for Arthur Napolitano, the coach at the time for Middletown’s youth football league, Pop Warner. “Basically, my job was to hold the clipboard, but I was on my way,” Almeida said with a laugh. Since then, he has coached ten seasons of Middletown football. In addition to coaching, Almedia teaches health and physical Education at his old middle school, Gaudet. Fifth grader Mason Gilman has been described as one of the best young golfers to ever come out of the island.
Eleven-year-old Mason Gilman discovered golf at age four by hitting plastic golf balls into his grandfather’s pool. His grandfather recognized young Gilman's natural talent and interest in the sport, so when he was eight, his grandfather took him to the country club for his first real game. Just three years later, Gilman has developed into what Pat Maher, former board member of Middletown's Wanumetonomy Country Club, describes as “one of the best young players to ever come out of the island.” “He is a great student of the game,” Maher said. A fifth grader at Gaudet Middle School, Gilman's dream is to eventually make the sport a career. “I would like to get a full scholarship to college, study to become a golf pro and then become a …

A high school in Appleton, Wisconsin tried an experiment under the enlightened guidance of their principal, LuAnn Coenen. She wanted to see if she could positively affect the fighting, weapons-carrying and general lack of focus and discipline in the school by changing the food the kids ate. Vending machines were replaced with water coolers; hamburgers and French fries were taken off the menu and …   more ›
