Fifth Grade Golfer Mason Gilman on Par to Become Pro

Fifth grader Mason Gilman has been described as one of the best young golfers to ever come out of the island.

Eleven-year-old Mason Gilman discovered golf at age four by hitting plastic golf balls into his grandfather’s pool.   His grandfather recognized young Gilman's natural talent and interest in the sport, so when he was eight, his grandfather took him to the country club for his first real game. Just three years later, Gilman has developed into what Pat Maher, former board member of Middletown's Wanumetonomy Country Club, describes as “one of the best young players to ever come out of the island.” “He is a great student of the game,” Maher said.   A fifth grader at Gaudet Middle School, Gilman's dream is to eventually make the sport a career. “I would like to get a full scholarship to college, study to become a golf pro and then become a …

Teeing Off for the Chamber

Despite cloudy skies, the Newport Chamber of Commerce continued its "fun day" at the annual golf tournament held Monday at the Green Valley Country Club.

Grey skies lingered above the putting green at Green Valley Country Club for the annual Chamber of Commerce golf tournament held Monday. Inside the club, golfers ate a buffet brunch and geared up for a predicted four and a half hour course. Newport County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jody J. Sullivan said the tournament, which has been occurring since the mid-1990s, provides a networking opportunity and a fun day. "It's not a real serious day," Sullivan said. The tournament serves as a fundraiser for the Middletown-based Newport County Chamber of Commerce, which is a business advocacy organization with the intent to enhance the business, civic and economic vitality of Newport County and greater Rhode Island.
