School Committee Says Community Must Move On From Homecoming Incident

Superintendent Kraeger said the school can learn from the incident but it is time for the community to move on

The Middletown School Committee said the community and school must move forward, after a statewide media frenzy that surrounded Saturday night’s homecoming dance, which was cut short after students protested the school’s no grinding policy. First reported by Middletown Patch on Saturday night, parents and students were strongly divided about the decision, as well as the school’s handling of the event.  Many parents said they were not notified until after the students had been released.  The school did not provide transportation for the students. “It’s unfortunate that the students and the community have been defined by this incident,” said Superintendent Rosemarie Kraeger. “You know, it has taken a life onto itself,” she said.  Kraeger …

A Town Divided - Why is Music Controversial?

What music was controversial when you went to high school? What do you think it is about music that often divides generations?

It was a real life story of Footloose on Saturday night, when the Middletown High School administration stopped a homecoming dance early after students protested a policy that prohibits sexually explicit dancing, often referred to as grinding.   Students claimed the DJ would not allow requests, and only played alternative music; a genre that most students said they did not like or know how to dance to.   After failed attempts to request their favorite music, such as Nicki Minaj, the majority of the student body sat on the floor and chanted in protest.  Some students even reported a near riot broke out.  The school administration denied that a riot took place. Update: Students Protest Homecoming Grinding Policy, Released Without Supervision

Some parents expressed frustration that students were released early from the dance, before parents were notified and without proper supervision or transportation

[editor's note: updated Oct. 15 at 12:00 p.m.] Middletown High School's homecoming dance was cut short by the school's administration on Saturday night, after students protested the school's "no grinding" policy.  Grinding, is a dance style that is typically considered sexually suggestive.  It can involve one or multiple dance partners.   The policy, according to the Middletown High School handbook states that "sexually explicit dancing will not be tolerated."  According to a MHS Senior, Principal Gail Abromitis made an announcement at lunch that "grinding" would not be tolerated at the dance.  The student said she has attended many dances throughout her four years at the school and she was not aware of any issues in the past.
