Where is Santa Claus?

Follow St. Nick's every move with the NORAD Santa tracker.

It’s Christmas Eve in Middletown — do you know where your supernatural gift-giver is? NORAD does.  The North American Aerospace Defense Command, charged with, "ensuring air sovereignty and air defense of the airspace of Canada and the United States,” according to their web site, has been tracking Old Saint Nick for the last 50 years. In 1955, according to the site's about us page, a Sears Roebuck ad for kids to call Santa misprinted the number, sending them instead to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD). The staff gave callers updates on Santa’s location, and they’ve been doing it every year since. They continued the tradition in 1958 when Canada and the US formed NORAD as a dual air monitoring system, updating the practice in …

Best Buy Reports Delivery Delays, Items Out of Stock

The retailer has told some customers that they cannot fulfill their online orders in time for Christmas.

Best Buy is telling some of its customers that the Christmas presents they ordered online won’t be coming in time for the holiday because the items are now out of stock. Best Buy officials have declined to say how many customers or the items affected, according to Minnesota Public Radio, which is the state that Best Buy headquarters is located. The company said overwhelming demand for products has caused “a situation that has affected redemption of some of our customers’ online orders.” Retail consultant Howard Davidowtiz suggested the problem has to do with inventory management, reported Minnesota Public Radio. R.J. Hottovy a retail analyst with Morningstar, said online retail sails are up about 15 percent this year. "With the …

What's Your Kid's Craziest Christmas Gift Request?

We want to know: what is the most outrageous, expensive, funny or adorable thing on your child's Christmas wish list?

Kids can say the darndest things sometimes, especially when rattling off Christmas wish lists. We decided to ask some of our Middletown Patch Facebook followers what the most outrageous, expensive, funny or adorable thing was on their child's Christmas wish list, after hearing that at least one youngster had asked for an iPad.  One user shared that her 8-year-old son asked Santa for a $500 Lego Star Wars set.  "I knew he was going to ask for that particular set, but I didn't realize how MUCH it was," she said. "not gonna happen. : )". What's the craziest request you've heard from a child, this holiday season, or one in year's past? Tell us your story in the comments section below.

POLL: Could We See a White Christmas?

Vote in our poll and share your thoughts in the comments section.

Could Rhode Island see a white Christmas?  The odds are relatively ylow, according to Cornell University's Northeast Regional Climate Center. The university determined this week that the Providence area has a 30 percent chance of seeing an inch or more on Dec. 25. That's better than Boston (a 20 percent chance), New York (12 percent) or D.C. (10 percent). But if you want the best chance at seeing snow, you'll have to head north. Pinkham Notch, NH, has a 95 percent chance. Even if our odds are slim, we still want to believe we'll wake up to the white stuff on Christmas morning. What do you think?

Vote in our poll and share your thoughts in the comments section below.

The heat is on, holiday shoppers. With Christmas less than two weeks away, the mad dash to finish gift shopping begins. Shipping giant FedEx reported that today was the busiest day in the company's nearly 40-year history, with forecasters predicting that approximately 17 million shipments would get moved Monday — double the company's typical daily volume. For those of us whose packages were part of that rush, we can rest assured that our gifts will be under the tree just in time for Christmas morning. For the rest of us...we'll either be running around frantically on Christmas Eve, or presenting our loved ones with gifts in the days that follow, reminding them "it's better late than never" and "it's the thought that counts."
