Newport Music Festivals Return to Non-Profits

The Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival will "return to their roots" as non-profits this summer, with George Wein and his Middletown-based company staff continuing to produce the event.

The Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival will revert back to non-profit events under the Newport Festivals Foundation Inc., according to the Foundation. George Wein and staff from his Middletown-based company will continue to produce the event. The jazz festival has been held in Newport since 1954 and the folk festival since 1959, and were originally not for profit. Under the Foundation, the festivals will “continue the tradition of featuring established and emerging performers” and “will honor the evolving cultural expression and freedom of creativity necessary to the growth and continuing vitality of the music.” In addition to returning to the non-profit sector, the Foundation will partner with local schools, colleges and …
