Gaudet Middle School students competed against students from Thompson Middle School in Newport and Portsmouth Middle School in the 16th Annual Black History Bowl on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
About 100 people gathered in the Thompson Middle School cafeteria on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to compete in the 16th Annual Black History Bowl. Coordinated by the Newport County NAACP Branch, (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) the event brought Aquidneck Islanders of all ages and races. The event kicked off at 3 p.m. in honor of George Triplett, Former Newport School Committee Chairperson, who received a Certificate of Appreciation in honor of his service from 1995-2010. A special prayer service held Friday night in Middletown was the first of many weekend events and Martin Luther King Day observances taking place throughout Aquidneck Island.
African-Americans and Jewish people are two groups that have experienced enslavement and abuse and have continued to be the targets of violent crimes. Both have also seen generations scattered throughout the world far from their ancestral homes. As we approach a national holiday on Monday to honor the American Civil Rights leader whose dream set out to stop such injustices and heal a nation, the two groups came together Friday night at Temple Shalom in Middletown for a special service to celebrate freedom and the life and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Also remembered was Debbie Friedman who passed away last Saturday in California.
