Middletown Police: DUI, Domestic Assault, Larceny

The following arrests were reported by the Middletown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

James Griffin, 22, of 101 Perham St., Rosbury, MA, was arrested on Friday around 1:21 a.m. on a driving under the influence charge. He was also cited with refusal to submit to a chemical test.  Police said he was pulled over because he was speeding on Aquidneck Avenue and driving erratically. When asked how much he had to drink, he allegedly responded, “I’m not going to lie, I had seven or eight.” Karen Anderson Gruchy, 53, of 26 Berkely Ct. was arrested on Wednesday around 10:50 p.m. on charges of domestic assault after she allegedly hit her husband with a fire poker.  Zachary Sears, 20, of 118 Busher Drive, was arrested on Wednesday around 10:06 a.m. on a domestic assault charge.  Paula Jones, 49, of 1 Bristol Road, was arrested on …

Middletown Man Hospitalized After Assault, Breaking and Entering

A 42-year-old Middletown man was hospitalized on Monday afternoon following an assault in his home.

  A 42-year-old Middletown man was transported to Newport Hospital after he was assaulted in his Smythe Street home during a breaking and entering last week. Middletown Police arrested Kieth J. Filkins, 34, of 15 Leal Terrace, Newport, on Monday, May 13 at 3:12 p.m. and charged with breaking and entering, felony drug possession, simple assault and possessing illegal weapons. Filkins allegedly walked into the Smythe Street home around 3 p.m. demanding money that he said was owed to him by the victim and then began attacking the 42-year-old. Police were dispatched to Smythe Street after the victim's child ran to a neighbor's home to call the police. Middletown Man Faces Multiple Domestic Charges

  Middletown Man Faces Multiple Domestic Charges Alfonso A. Toppa, 40, of 2 Wilson Road, Middletown, was arrested on Saturday, May 11 at 12:14 a.m. and charged with domestic simple assault, domestic vandalism and domestic refusal to relinquish a telephone. Toppa allegedly grabbed his girlfriend by the throat and pushed her down onto their bed during an argument, according to reports by the Middletown Police Department. Toppa will be arraigned in district court on May 17. Jealous Rage Leads to Two Arrests

Two Newport women were arrested after they allegedly yelled at an employe at Aquidneck Pizza in Middletown and kicked her car window. Victoria Gamble, 29, of 59 Homer and Amanda Olszewski, 28, of 16 Vaughn St. Apt. #1, reportedly sat down at the bar and ordered two beers around 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Gamble asked for an employee by name and said she was going to “beat the [expletive] out of her," said police. The women yelled at employees until the owner intervened and escorted the two women outside. As she left the restaurant, Gamble allegedly yelled, “You slept with a married man, you can’t hide forever.” A witness said Olszewski walked over to the employee's car, kicked the driver side mirror and broke the glass. Police Arrest Three After Traffic Stop, Find Crack Cocaine in Car

The following arrests were reported by the Middletown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Middletown police found crack cocaine and arrested everyone in the car after officers made a traffic stop on Sunday around 9:00 p.m. The car was pulled over on West Main Road because its registration sticker was not visible, said police. The driver, Steven Meo, 26, of 51 Chestnut Hill, Cranston, reportedly had track marks on his arm and admitted he injected himself with heroin earlier that day. Meo said a Suboxone packet belonged to him, which helped him with the heroin, said police. The drug is often prescribed for opioid dependence, although Meo reportedly said he did not have a prescription. The passenger, Frank Viera, 44, of an unknown address in Pawtucket initially told police his name was Frank Darosa. He later told police he did not…

Police Arrest Middletown Man for Second Time in 2 Days

  Andrew Joseph Ripa is having a bad week.  Ripa, 21, of 1 Jude St., Middletown, was arrested Wednesday, May 1, for the second time in 48 hours.  He was first arrested Monday at 11:10 p.m. after allegedly becoming involved in an argument with a 19-year-old Middletown woman. During the argument, he allegedly refused to leave and damaged the woman's phone.  Ripa was charged on Monday with domestic, larceny under $500; domestic, disorderly conduct; and domestic, vandalism and malicious injury to property.  On Wednesday, just after midnight, police arrived at the Rodeway Inn on West Main Road. The officer saw a vehicle belonging to a person who had a "No Contact" order against Ripa.  Officers confirmed Ripa was staying at the motel. The woman …

Good Point Denis. I have often wondered why the no contact orders are not issued to both parties. All to often the person being protected by these orders are found to be in the company of the person they say they need protection from. I find this especially troubling when the victim transports themselves to the "perps" home or are driving around town with them in their car.   more ›

Two Men Allegedly Printed and Used Counterfeit Money

Two men were arrested Tuesday after police say they printed and used counterfeit money in Newport and Middletown

Two men were arrested Tuesday after police said they had been using counterfeit $20 bill at Newport and Middletown businesses. Daniel Spearin, 36, of 249 Connell Hwy Apt #237 and Jerry Moening, 25, of 84 Abby Ln, North Kingstown allegedly had been printing the bills while living at the Motel 6 in Newport.  Newport and Middletown detectives worked together on the investigation that led to the arrests. Moening reportedly told police that he worked together with Spearin to produce fake the money. He said that he watched Spearin “scrub” one dollar bills with oven cleaner and a toothbrush to remove the ink from the paper. They taped the bills to a piece of paper and printed the bills to convert them into $20 bills, said police.    Moening told…

Man Allegedly Damages Woman's Phone

The following arrests were reported by the Middletown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Police arrested a Middletown man Monday after he allegedly became involved in an argument with a 19-year-old Middletown woman.  Andrew Joseph Ripa, 21, of 1 Jude St., Middletown, was arrested at 11:10 p.m. and charged with the following: domestic, larceny under $500; domestic, disorderly conduct; and domestic, vandalism and malicious injury to property.  Police were called to a Honeyman Avenue residence for a report of a man banging on a door and refusing to leave.  According to police reports, Ripa apparently became involved in an argument with the woman at the residence.   Gary Lewis, 32, of 31 Harbor Village Dr. was arrested Thursday around 6:03 p.m. on a domestic assault charge after he allegedly hit a 21-year-old Middletown woman.  When police responded to 5 Star Barber Shop to speak with Lewis, he was allegedly screaming into the phone "You’re going to tell the police that I didn’t touch you” and “You’re going to tell the police nothing happened.” Dean Abdus-Salaam, 48, of 15 Meeting Street was arrested on Sunday around 1:39 a.m. on a driving under the influence charge. Police Find Crack Pipe After Woman Allegedly Assaulted Redbox Customer

Middletown police made two arrests Saturday night after a couple called to complain they were assaulted while selecting a movie from the Shell Station Redbox. Kathleen Willis-Harrington, 47, of 45 Goldenrod Drive, was charged with driving under the influence and simple assault. She was also cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test.  Nickolas DiPanni, 23, of 30 Casino Ave., Cranston, was arrested on an active bench warrant for failure to appear in court. The couple reportedly said Willis-Harrington yelled to “hurry up” then slammed the other woman into her car. "Get in the car, you [expletive]," she allegedly said.
