GoLocalProv Ranks MHS Best On Island

Middletown High School is ranked #8 out of 49 schools, according to a new report released Tuesday

Out of the three public high schools on Aquidneck Island, Middletown best serves its students, according the 2013 GoLocalProv report released Tuesday. GoLocal said it employs a formula developed at Babson College to assess and weight each school's latest NECAP and SAT scores, plus per-pupil funding, student-teacher ratios, and graduation rates. Of the 49 Rhode Island schools measured, Middletown High School was ranked #8, up from last year’s #12 position. Portsmouth High School dropped to #12, compared with last year's #8 position. I suspect this is the answer: "assess and weight each school's latest NECAP and SAT scores..." In other words, MHS teachers are far better at teaching to the tests than PHS or RHS.   more ›

Middletown Upset by Juanita Sanchez in Finals

The Juanita Sanchez Complex survives a late flurry from Middletown to take the Division III title 43-36.

KINGSTON – Despite 18 points from Chelsea Dowler, the Juanita Sanchez Complex Cavaliers are the Rhode Island girls’ basketball Division III champions, with a 43-36 win Sunday afternoon at the Ryan Center on the University of Rhode Island campus. The Islanders dug themselves into an early hole with ugly shooting and poor defensive rebounding. Despite foul trouble to starters D’Asia Allen and Emely Cabrera, the Cavaliers built a 19-9 first half lead thanks to 10 points from freshman Elfreda Hoff. Juanita Sanchez built its lead up to as much as 10 points with about eight minutes remaining, 30-20.
