A motorist called police just before 11 am to report a body in the water near the bridge.
Bristol police and members of the Marine Task Force responded to an area near the Mount Hope Bridge this morning and recovered a body from the water, Deputy Chief Steven Contente confirmed. During a phone interview just before noon, Contente said police are not releasing the name of the deceased, pending notification of family. A motorist contacted police around 11 a.m. to report finding the body in the water; rescue personnel brought the deceased to Rhode Island Hospital. The Rhode Island Breaking News Source Twitter feed reported that the "person possibly jumped from the Mount Hope Bridge."

State Police are looking into whether distracted driving was involved in Saturday's crash, as well as any medical issues. The crash remains under investigation.
State Police say "alcohol" was not a factor in a head-on crash that resulted in the death of a Barrington man and injured several others Saturday night. Paul L. Paul Matthews, 63, of Heritage Road, died Saturday night after a head-on collision on the Mt. Hope Bridge.
State Police have released the identity of the man killed after a head-on motor vehicle crash occurred Saturday night on the Mt. Hope Bridge. Paul L. Matthews, 63, of Heritage Road, Barrington, died at the scene, reports The Providence Journal. Warren resident Lenor C. Andrade, a passenger in the van driven by Matthews, was still being treated at Rhode Island Hospital, according to The Journal. Four Portsmouth residents were transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. These individuals were James and Ann Hitchen, passengers in Matthews' van, and John Kelchner and Susan Kelchner. The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time. On Wednesday, the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority board of directors voted unanimously to table a discussion on a proposal to ask the General Assembly to approve tolls on the Mount Hope Bridge or increase them on the Newport bridge. The board voted to postpone this discussion until its next meeting on Feb. 8. Many local residents are voicing opposition to this proposal. The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) announced today that it will hold two additional public hearings this month to continue its conversation with the public about its revenue needs and tolling options. RITBA held its first session Wednesday night in Bristol, where approximately 100 residents came out, many to express displeasure with a proposal to add tolling back to the Mt. Hope Bridge. According to a Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority plan, Rhode Islanders with an E-Z Pass would pay a toll of 52 cents, and out-of-state residents with E-Z Passes would pay $2.50. Anyone without an EZ Pass would be billed $3.25.

Those are the options on the table, as revealed during a public hearing Wednesday night at Jacky's Galaxie restaurant in Bristol. A second public hearing will be held Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Portsmouth High School.
