There is an advisory in effect until 3 p.m. today
[update at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, vehicle restrictions on the Pell Bridge have been removed. RITBA has reopened the bridge to all traffic.] Around 6:00 a.m. this morning, the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority closed the Newport Pell Bridge to box trucks and certain commercial vehicles due to sustained gusty winds in excess of 64 mph. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory until 3 p.m. today. According to the RI Turnpike and Bridge Authority's website: Travel may be restricted when winds originating from directions perpendicular to the bridge are recorded in excess of 58 miles per hour. On Wednesday, the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority board of directors voted unanimously to table a discussion on a proposal to ask the General Assembly to approve tolls on the Mount Hope Bridge or increase them on the Newport bridge. The board voted to postpone this discussion until its next meeting on Feb. 8. Many local residents are voicing opposition to this proposal. In keeping with its policy to regularly review toll rates, the board of directors of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) today engaged in a discussion about the need to increase tolls on the Newport Pell Bridge. “In 2009, RITBA held numerous public meetings to discuss the future of tolling on the Newport Pell and Mount Hope Bridges as well as to discuss the revenue and maintenance needs of both bridges,” said David A. State officials will close down both the Newport (Pell) and Jamestown bridges if wind speeds top 70 mph.
The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency announced it will close both the Jamestown and Pell (Newport) bridges when wind speeds hit 70 mph, which is expected as early as Saturday night or Sunday morning. Rhode Island is now under a hurricane warning as of 5 p.m. today. The National Weather Service has changed the forecast status from watch to warning as Hurricane Irene draws closer to southern New England. Rhode Island State Police Col. Steven O'Donnell is asking all residents remain off the roads during the storm as well.

Both my husband and daughter travel over the Newport Bridge daily. I understand that bridge upkeep is expensive but the cost should not be pushed to commuters to and from the island. How about considering an I195 toll? We already pay our fair share.   more ›
