Big Brothers Big Sisters shared the following information with the community. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State (BBBSOS) has announced it will open a new Donation Center on Aquidneck Island to serve Middletown, Portsmouth, Newport and neighboring communities. The Center, located in the Airport Plaza at 1341 West Main Road, is expected to open as early as May 4 and is intended to create a sustained source of revenue for the social service activities of BBBSOS. It is the second such center in Rhode Island, the first located next to the agency’s headquarters at 1540 Pontiac Avenue in Cranston. The Newport County Chamber of Commerce unanimously voted to oppose increasing the toll on the Newport Pell Bridge and tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge.

The following information was submitted by the Newport County Chamber of Commerce. The Board of Directors of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce has unanimously voted to oppose any and all tolls or toll increases on both the Newport Pell Bridge and the Sakonnet River Bridge. Any additional tolls would place an additional and unfair burden on Newport Pell and Sakonnet Bridge users, especially Aquidneck Island businesses, residents, and border state commuters. Additional tolls would: The Board also expressed concern that a comprehensive analysis of the economic impact to the existing and future business environment, cost of living, and employment and workforce, has not been completed. The board voted in opposition of the two percent increase in Meals & Beverage tax.

The Newport County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted at their February Board meeting to oppose passage of the two percent increase in the Meals & Beverage tax contained in the Governor’s 2013 budget. The hospitality industry is a key economic driver in the state of Rhode Island and one of the few industries currently experiencing growth coming out of the long recession. Local businesses have the opportunity to both network and to have fun during the Newport County Chamber of Commerce's golf tournament to be held on Monday, June 27, at the Montaup Country Club. An annual event, the golf tournament is being sponsored by companies such as GenCorp, Cox Business Services, SEABIZ and McGrath's Clambakes to name a few. The sponsors will fund a variety of prizes for competitions such as longest drive, closest to the pin and best team overall. The golf tournament is one of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce's "budget items as a small business," said Carol Mutty of the chamber's Membership and Events Management Department.
