According to a new report designed to measure the economic impact of the Newport festivals, the events contribute to $5 million in direct spending in Rhode Island.
At the request of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), Newport Festivals Foundation commissioned a study designed to measure the economic impact of the 2012 Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals on the State of Rhode Island. This study was conducted by Advantage Marketing Information, North Kingstown, RI. When it comes to the Newport Folk Festival, it pays to plan ahead. Despite expanding to a three-day schedule, it seems like folk fans just can’t get enough. Five months before the event, all tickets except for Friday passes have sold out. Yes, that means that all early bird, three-day, two-day, and Saturday passes have been snatched up. The early bird pre-sale tickets for 3-day passes at the Newport Folk Festival came and went in less than 20 minutes.
Newport Folk Festival hopefuls flooded Ticketmaster to claim $159 pre-sale tickets for three days of music at Fort Adams. Many, if not most, were shut out. Early Bird tickets, which could only be purchased with a special promo code, went on sale at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning and were sold out by 10:15 a.m. Three-day, two-day and single day Friday tickets are now available. No code is needed. The Newport Folk Festival’s Facebook page thanked festival-goers for their support and tweeted “BTW we will be 'scrubbing' all early bird sales to check for duplicate orders and any suspicious scalping activity.” Their Facebook page also replied to one customer who was unable to purchase Early Bird tickets, saying, " We understand your frustration but we…

The Newport Folk Festival is one of Rhode Island’s most anticipated events of the year, with thousands of music-lovers trekking out to Fort Adams to get their folk on. The weekend shows have been sold out since April, but tickets for tonight’s Wilco show are currently still available, and can be purchased here. Last year, the festival was sold out in advance for the first time ever, with a full three weeks left. That record was eclipsed this year, with tickets selling out three months beforehand. Tell us who wish you could see again at the Newport Folk Festival.
With the announcement of this year’s Newport Folk Festival line-up on the horizon, we want to know: who would you most like to see return to the stage at Fort Adams? There are too many to name them all, but we’ve put together a list of some of the best acts over the years to earn your votes. Some acts have broken up, or are no longer with us, but we can dream, right? The line-up for this year’s Newport Folk Festival will be announced tonight (technically tomorrow, March 1) at midnight. Even without a line-up, early bird tickets sold out in less than an hour earlier this month. Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris and the Decemberists headlined last year’s show. This year’s festival is scheduled for July 28 and 29 at Fort Adams.

The sold out Newport Folk Festival was in full swing this weekend afternoon as artists play to an enthusiastic crowd of young and old fans of folk.
The 2011 Newport Folk Festival is now a memory for the thousands who danced, sang and relaxed the weekend away at Fort Adams State Park with perfect temperatures and the bluest of skies. For many, the festival is tradition and for many it was a new experience, but in the end fun was had by all at the sold-out show.
