Two Men Allegedly Printed and Used Counterfeit Money

Two men were arrested Tuesday after police say they printed and used counterfeit money in Newport and Middletown

Two men were arrested Tuesday after police said they had been using counterfeit $20 bill at Newport and Middletown businesses. Daniel Spearin, 36, of 249 Connell Hwy Apt #237 and Jerry Moening, 25, of 84 Abby Ln, North Kingstown allegedly had been printing the bills while living at the Motel 6 in Newport.  Newport and Middletown detectives worked together on the investigation that led to the arrests. Moening reportedly told police that he worked together with Spearin to produce fake the money. He said that he watched Spearin “scrub” one dollar bills with oven cleaner and a toothbrush to remove the ink from the paper. They taped the bills to a piece of paper and printed the bills to convert them into $20 bills, said police.    Moening told…

Driver Hits RIPTA Bus, Leaves Scene

The following incident was reported by the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Jamaal Mack, 22, of 257 Rogers Ln., Middletown was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly hit a parked RIPTA bus in Newport  He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident.  No injuries were reported.  Police said Mack allegedly hit the bus on the corner of Broadway and Friendship Street in Newport and kept driving.  The bus had around 13 passengers on-board at the time of the accident, said police. A witness followed Mack to Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Middletown. Police said they went to Enterprise and found the suspect car that had visible damage, including a broken passenger mirror.  Mack allegedly said he was afraid he would be late for work and thought he could report the accident later.

Underage Drinking Party; Man Faces Domestic Charges

Police Bust Woman, Underage Drinkers  Lisa Kingston, 31, of 231 Maple Ave., Newport was arrested around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, March 25  for purchasing alcohol for minors. Briana Anderson, 18, of 130 Rogers Lane, Middletown, Paul G. Salas, 19, of 74 Third Beach Road, Middletown and a minor were cited around 10 p.m. for possession of alcohol by a minor. Police were dispatched to 231 Maple Ave. for a report of a party involving underage drinking. Reports said the group initially ignored police. When Kingston came outside, she told police she was alone. Officers entered the home and found the other three hiding in the bedroom. They all submitted to breathalyzer tests. Police Release Official Data from Parade Weekend

According to police officials, 84 people were arrested last weekend.

  The Newport Police Department released the official data regarding the arrests made over the course of St. Patrick’s Day weekend on Tuesday morning. Lt. William Fitzgerald said due to double reporting, the initial report of 94 arrests has been corrected to 84. 16 Arrested in Drug Sweep by Newport Police Department

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

  On February 28, 2013, members of the Newport Police Department Vice/Narcotics Unit, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency, concluded a six-month undercover operation focusing on street level drug dealing within the City of Newport. A total of twenty-five arrest warrants and two search warrants were obtained for individuals who are suspected of dealing crack cocaine, cocaine, and prescription drugs. The investigation is ongoing with more information to follow. Middletown Man Arrested in Alleged Robbery

The suspect was charged with first-degree robbery and crack cocaine possession.

  Newport police have arrested the man suspected of robbing a Newport woman early this morning at the intersection of Gould Street and Congdon Avenue, officials said late Wednesday afternoon. William Thomas, 33, of Middletown, was charged with first-degree robbery and possession of crack cocaine. According to reports, he allegedly followed the 28-year-old victim home after she left Pour Judgement around 1 a.m. He pushed her down and stole her wallet before fleeing the scene in a car with another woman.  During the robbery, the victim broke off the side-view mirror of the car. Police Seek to Identify This Newport Man

Newport police are looking to identify this man who has been linked to suspicious activity in the Point area.

Newport police are looking to identify the man in the photos in the gallery to the right. He is not wanted on any charges. According to Sgt. Christopher Hayes, the man has knocked on residents doors in the Point area and his activity has been reported as suspicious. As of right now, he is a person of interest, Hayes said. According to the Knowing Newport message board, the man’s “recent daytime/nighttime activities in and around homes in The Point, over the last month, have raised concerns.” He has been seen riding a mountain bike and wearing a black backpack. Newport Police Log: Middletown Man Charged with Threats

Jacob Trifero, 32, of 14 Bayview Park, Middletown, was arrested around 6:15 p.m.  on Wednesday, Dec. 19, for a disorderly threats charge. A stop was put out for Trifero after he reportedly made threats with a knife. He also implied he had a gun, witnesses said. Newport Police Uncover Marijuana Grow House

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

  A Newport man was arrested after police more than 20 marijuana plants in his home. Antonio B. Carson Sr., 50, of 20 Chapel St., Newport, was arrested around 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, for a drug manufacturing charge. According to reports, police found more than 25 marijuana plants growing in Carson’s basement. Police were at Carson’s home to investigate the whereabouts of his daughter, who had been missing since the afternoon. She was later found at her cousin’s house. When police asked to look in the basement to search for her, Carson said he did not have a basement. He also said the door leading to the basement was a closet.  Once police went into the basement, they found a grow operation and seized the plants, fertilizer, and …

Police Identify Women Killed in Shipyard Accident

The car was discovered around 6:30 a.m. on Friday morning in the water off of the Newport shipyard.

The following information was provided by the Newport Police Department. At approximately 6:28 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, a fuel delivery driver making a delivery to Newport Shipyard and Marina observed a vehicle flipped upside down and partially submerged in the water near the stone pier. The Newport Police and Newport Fire Departments were called to the scene. During rescue operations, three adult females were found dead inside the vehicle. The victims have been identified as Jennifer Way, 39, of Saunderstown, RI, Louise Owen, 39, of the United Kingdom, Wales,  and Femmetje Staring, 39, of Holland. There are no indications of foul play. The investigation is continuing. This is a developing story. Stay tuned to Patch for details.
