Local Man Stabbed to Death in Gould Street Murder

Police arrested a 42-year-old man who was charged with stabbing a local Newport man to death Wednesday night.

A man who police say has no known address has been arrested for allegedly stabbing and killing a local Newport man. Police officials said they believe the two men knew each other.  At approximately 11:12 p.m. on Wednesday night the Newport Police Department received a 9-1-1 call for an assault in progress at 53 1⁄2 Gould Street. Officers arrived a short time later and found 44-year-old Anthony E. Simmons of 53 1⁄2 Gould Street, Apt B, Newport, who had been stabbed several times. Simmons was transported to the Newport Hospital emergency room by the Newport Fire Department rescue and was pronounced dead at 11:40 p.m. Officials said they had been several witness reports of the two men arguing before the incident.  At 11:18 pm, officers …

There are way to many untrue stories. I am a member of the family in the correction that needs to be made is, Anthony has never been convicted of murder. The incident that is being referred to back in the late eighties early nineties. Anthony was convicted of intent to do bodily harm. Not murder! He served 5 years in Virginia for this. Man Killed in Pineapple Inn Fire Identified

The man who was killed in an early morning fire on Sunday was identified as 55-year-old Steve Francis.

Police have identified the man who was killed during a fire at the Pineapple Inn on Coddington Highway early Sunday morning as 55-year-old Steve Francis. Francis was formally of Westerly and had been staying at the motel for the last few months, police officials said. The fire broke out at 12:11 a.m. Sunday morning. According to a release from the Newport Police Department, Room 115, which Francis had been staying in, was fully engulfed in flames when police arrived. Motel guests “made heroic attempts” to rescue Francis from the room, reports said. At one point, bystanders were able to reach him through the bathroom window, but were not able to pull him out.
