The Newport Yachting Center's 31st annual Schweppes Great Chowder Cook-Off will be held this Saturday, June 2, from noon to 6 p.m.
Are you ready for some chow-DAH? The Newport Yachting Center’s 31st annual Schweppes Great Chowder Cook-Off kicks off the traditional summer season in Newport this Saturday, June 2, from noon to 6 p.m. Two dozen competitors will vie for “Best Clam," “Best Seafood" and “Best Creative” chowder glory. The event will also feature all-you-can-eat “chowda" or "chow-dah," the Clam Cake Chow-Down competition, live music and a variety of entertainment for all ages. The New England food festival scene is about to heat up just like the weather! New locations have just been added including the Newport Food Truck Festival at the Newport Yachting Center on Saturday, Oct. 20. There are 11 festivals in total spanning from June through October launching on June 10 with the Boston Food Truck Festival at UMass Boston Campus Center (rescheduled from May 26th) and ending in Newport. All festivals will take place from noon to 4 pm, with a special VIP Preview hour from 11am – noon. The Newport Irish Festival held over Labor Day Weekend brought families from all over Rhode Island for three days of music, food, shopping and fun.
The Newport Yachting Center welcomed the "Newport Waterfront Irish Festival" over Labor Day Weekend for music, food and fun for the whole family. Five stages with more than 100 acts and vendors over three days make the annual event one of the largest Irish festivals in the United States, according to organizers. Pogey, the Tartan Terrors, and pipe and drum bands from all over the country, including Newport's own AOH Pipe & Drum Corps, took to the stages, along with comedy acts, Irish step-dancers and more. The Saturday night concert drew a packed crowd with fans spanning generations.
The Indigo Girls kicked off the Sunset Music Series for the season Saturday night at the Newport Yachting Center. The Girls played a powerful but more intimate set in the smaller waterfront venue, without the backing of the full band and backup singers typically seen at larger shows, stadiums and music festivals. Fans spanning generations loved every moment of it; they danced in the aisles and sang along to hits spanning the duo's 20-year career. "Joking," "Galileo," "Shame On You," and "Closer to Fine" along with hits from more recent years had teen fans to older adults singing along.
