Shooter Asked Woman 'How Do You Want to Die'

Newport Police reports said a woman allegedly threatened people inside 11 Memorial Blvd. with gun before turning it on herself.

A 32-year-old Tiverton woman walked into Franklin & Company Interiors in Newport Tuesday morning with a gun and threatened to shoot people inside before confronting one woman with a knife and gun and asking her how she wanted to die. Newport Police announced this morning that the first call they received about Tuesday's shooting/stabbing incident reported that a woman was inside the building threatening people with a handgun. When they arrived, officers say they could hear shouting from inside the building, and as they were entering several people fled and a gun shot was heard. UPDATE: One Dead, One Injured in Shooting and Stabbing on Memorial Boulevard

The incident was an act of assault, City Manager Jane Howington said.

A shooting and stabbing at 11 Memorial Blvd. in Newport earlier this morning has left one dead and one in the hospital, City Manager Jane Howington said.  Police said the incident was an act of assault and is currently under investigation, she said. Newport Police Lt. William Fitzgerald said the incident was between two women who knew each other. The situation is contained, he said. Howington said there was no cause for concern of more shootings.  Salve Regina University issued an alert to students at 10:46 a.m. today saying Newport Police has reported a shooting and stabbing on Memorial Boulevard. “NPD report shooting and stabbing on Memorial Blvd. Stay on campus and away from Memorial Blvd until further notice,” the text alert read.
