Stabbing Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

Joseph Perryman plead not guilty to murder on Tuesday

  Joseph Perryman, 42, of Newport pleaded not guilty to murder in Newport County Superior Court on Tuesday.  He is being held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institute.  Perryman allegedly stabbed and murdered 44-year-old Anthony E. Simmons, also of Newport. He was arrested and charged with murder last December after being found a short distance away from the crime scene. According to police reports, several witnesses said the two men had been arguing before the incident at the 53 ½  Gould St. apartment. Perryman allegedly stabbed Simmons several times. Newport Police investigate Stabbing

Newport Police are investigating the stabbing and expect to release more details later this afternoon. Check back with Patch for the details later.

Police are investigating a possible stabbing in downtown Newport late last night, Sgt. John Carlone said Sunday afternoon. "There is an active investigation," Carlone said. "That's all I can say at this time." Carlone said he expects the department will release more information about the incident later this afternoon. Shooter Asked Woman 'How Do You Want to Die'

Newport Police reports said a woman allegedly threatened people inside 11 Memorial Blvd. with gun before turning it on herself.

A 32-year-old Tiverton woman walked into Franklin & Company Interiors in Newport Tuesday morning with a gun and threatened to shoot people inside before confronting one woman with a knife and gun and asking her how she wanted to die. Newport Police announced this morning that the first call they received about Tuesday's shooting/stabbing incident reported that a woman was inside the building threatening people with a handgun. When they arrived, officers say they could hear shouting from inside the building, and as they were entering several people fled and a gun shot was heard. Officers entered Franklin & Company and found a woman lying face down in the office area, bleeding from the head. One of the individuals fleeing from the building …
