Middletown vs. Portsmouth Fire Departments Blood Drive Competition

Portsmouth and Middletown fire departments will hold life saving blood drives this Friday

Middletown might had been defeated to Portsmouth in the recent Little League District Championship, but residents have a second chance at some friendly community competition this week.  This Friday, July 20, Portsmouth and Middletown fire departments will hold life saving blood drives from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.  The event is open to the public.  In the first annual community blood drive competition held last year, Middletown edged out Portsmouth by collecting 17 pints of blood, just one more than Portsmouth. Together, the 33 pints collected potentially saved nearly 100 lives. The drives, both open to the public, will be held at the individual fire headquarters -- 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown and 2300 East Main Road, Portsmouth. The Rhode Island …

A total of three people were transported by ambulance following a motor vehicle crash Saturday morning at the intersection of West Main Road and Union Street.

Three people were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital Saturday morning following a rollover crash on West Main Road at Union Street.  A silver, Toyota RAV4 landed on its driver's side around 11:08 a.m. at the corner of West Main Road and Redwood Road, just across from Union Street.   Gathering on the corner, neighbors watched as residents quickly came to the aid of the victims. Before emergency crews arrived, at least a half dozen people could be seen directing traffic at the busy intersection, as well as standing on top and around the rolled-over van, talking to the two adult victims trapped inside.  Police and Rescue personnel arrived a short time later, directing traffic and quickly working to extricate the two victims.  A man…

Middletown Firefighters Assist on Two Portsmouth Blazes

The two incidents occurred Thursday night and Friday morning.

Middletown firefighters have been busy the past 24 hours, assisting with two reported blazes in Portsmouth. The first occurred Thursday night at a two-story house at 222 Point Road. "Someone called in from The Cove and said it appeared to be an outside fire," said Portsmouth Deputy Chief Michael Cranson. "There was heavy fire at the back of the house, the exterior. The fire extended into the interior, as well."  Crews managed to put the fire under control within 30 minutes. However, the property's long driveway and chilly conditions made the fight difficult.  Middletown and Tiverton fire crews assisted Portsmouth as the scene. Members of the Bristol Fire Department manned the Portsmouth station during the response.  Then this morning, an …

Did You See This Flame?

A local gas company is testing its pipelines by burning off excess gas.

Have you seen the flame in the photo above and wondered what it was?  A Tiverton resident recently contacted Patch and asked about the flame, which has become visible from across the water in Fogland. Algonquin Gas Transmissions, who owns and operates interstate natural gas transmission facilities, including the meter station at 13 Old Mill Lane in Portsmouth, is currently burning off excess gas, according to local fire departments. According to a memo released to local fire departments, Algonquin is engaged in an Integrity Management Program to internally inspect and maintain its pipelines as mandated by the U.S. Department of Transportation safety and maintenance regulations. This past spring, Algonquin constructed facilities at the …

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m.

Portsmouth Fire Department crews fought a garage fire on Mintwater Brook Lane in Portsmouth Friday night. Firefighters from Middletown and Bristol assisted at the scene while Tiverton firefighters covered the Portsmouth Fire Station. The call reportedly came in after 6 p.m. According to Fire Chief Jeffrey Lynch, the initial report was of a truck fire near a building. When the first fire crews arrived, Lynch says they found a fire in a dumpster that had extended to a single-story ranch home with a detached garage. Crews attacked the fire and were able to knock it down and stop it from spreading further. Lynch said no one appeared to be living in the home at the time. Dawn Pheliaro, who lives in the house next door, said she was home with …
