Wednesday: Pet Loss Support Group and Comprehensive Plan Meeting

A look at what's happening in and around Middletown today.

The Potter League will host a Pet Loss Support Group for anyone who has lost a pet, has a dying pet, or is struggling with the decision of euthanasia at 5:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required by calling Jill at 846-8276 x 122 or emailing her at jillh@potterleague.org. The Middletown Comprehensive Plan Update Committee will meet at 5 p.m. at Town Hall. The Middletown Parks & Recreation Department’s Men’s Pick-Up Basketball League for men ages 18 and up will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. at Gaudet Middle School. The cost is $5 per session or $20 for a season pass. The Newport Library will host a Bookchat at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend to share thoughts on whatever book they are reading with other book enthusiasts.  Light refreshments will be …

Tuesday: Name the Middletown Mermaid Contest and New Park Steward Program

The Middletown Library is holding a Name the Middletown Mermaid Contest beginning today. The Middletown Mermaid has been watching over the Children’s Department at the library since October and is made of papier-mache. Children ages 4 to 12 can enter up to two names to name the mermaid and the winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to Island Books. Deadline for entries is January 31 at 8 p.m. The Town of Middletown has announced a new Park Steward Program and is looking for people interested in participating by acting as a liaison to the town with updates and suggestions on how to improve various parks. The appointment is for a two-year term. Applications are available in the Town Clerk’s office and are due by January 16. The Potter …

Thursday: Santa Pajama Storytime and Guys Night Out

A look at what's happening in and around Middletown today.

Barnes & Noble will host a pajama storytime with a visit from Santa from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight. Santa arrives at 5:30 p.m., and there will be holiday crafts and free cookies for the kids in the café. Barnes & Noble will also be donating a portion of the proceeds of to the Silveria Nursery School playground improvement fund. It’s Guy’s Night Out at the Potter League’s Critter Glitter sale tonight. Men can enjoy the assistance of personal shoppers and free gift wrapping on their purchases of Sequin jewelry at 80 percent off, along with beer and bites and door prizes. Tuesday: New Preschoolers Session Begins and Puppy Playgroup

A new three-week session of Playful Preschoolers Storytime for children ages 4 and 5 will begin today and meet each Tuesday through Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Middletown Public Library. The program is free but pre-registration is required. Call 846-1573 for more information. The Middletown Town Council is asking residents to take a survey posted on the Middletown Web site about their feelings on wind turbines to help them as they revise the town ordinance on wind turbine development. Wednesday: Middletown Comprehensive Plan Meeting and Puppy Playgroup

The Middletown Comprehensive Plan Update Committee will meet today at 5 p.m. in the second- floor conference room at Town Hall to review the housing element and discuss affordable housing. The Potter League holds a small breed doggy playgroup every Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. Dogs of all ages up to 25 pounds are welcome. The cost is $7 per class and families can bring up to two dogs. The Mercy Center for Spiritual Life at Salve Regina University will celebrate the “Festival of Lights” tonight at 7 p.m. in Ochre Court. Felines, cats, kittens. No matter how you say it, the animal of the month at the Potter League for Animals is definitely the cat. Despite having adopted out 46 cats in the month of August, there are still 118 cats in the care of the shelter. They have even had to open more rooms to house the cats and display them to the public. If you’re thinking of adding a kitty to your home, now is a great time to visit the Potter League and see the wide variety of cats and kittens they have available for adoption.
