The fatal victim of a Prudence Island house fire last month has been identified.
The tragic news that friends and relatives believed to be true was confirmed by police Tuesday when officials confirmed the identity of a body found in the remains of a Prudence Island house fire. Portsmouth police say the victim has been positively identified as 28-year-old Shannon Cubellis, a tenant of the property. The victim was identified by the Rhode Island Department of Health through DNA testing, according to police. Cubellis, who attended Portsmouth High School, was well-known on the island. Officials have discovered a body in the remains of a house fire on Prudence Island, reported The Sakonnet Times on Tuesday afternoon. The Providence Journal also reports officials are now confirming a person was killed in the fire. The victim's identity has not been released. "During a search of the ruins, investigators discovered one set of human remains," wrote Portsmouth Police Chief Lance Hebert in an e-mailed statement Tuesday afternoon. Portsmouth fire crews battled a fast-moving house fire on Prudence Island this morning. The blaze completely destroyed the single-family home on Concord Avenue. Police are currently searching for Shannon Cabellas, a man who was renting the property, according to The Sakonnet Times. Police detectives and members of the Rhode Island Fire Marshal's Office are currently on scene investigating this fire. The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) was also called to the island Tuesday to assist with the investigation. The cause of the blaze is unknown.
