Snowstorm to Hit Rhode Island, Coastal Areas Might Be Spared

Snow is expected in Rhode Island this weekend, yet coastal areas might be spared.

Once again, the snow is melting. But once again, don't put the shovels away. Because once again, the weekend is bringing us more snow. A new snowstorm is headed our way for Saturday and Sunday, which could dump another 8 inches on some parts of Rhode Island. Middletown might be spared, however.  At this time, the best chance for this will be north of the Massachusetts turnpike and away from the coast, reports the National Weather Service (NWS).  Being three days away, the NWS says the forecast is still uncertain and could change.  However, the threat for a period of heavy snow is possible across much of the region. The NWS warns of the potential for some downed tree limbs and power outages where heavy wet snow occurs. What's your guess? …

Health Department to Private Well Owners: 'Boil Your Water'

The Department of Health is asking private well owners to boil their water as a safety precaution.

Due to the excessive snow from the winter storm and from rainfall on Monday, some private wells may be impacted. The Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH) reminds Rhode Islanders who lost water pressure or have a flooded well head (surrounded by water), to take steps to ensure the safety of drinking water: For more information visit www.health.ri.gov/drinkingwaterquality/for/privatewellowners/ or call the Health Information Line at 401-222-5960 / RI Relay 711.

Should Middletown Fine Residents Who Do Not Clear Walkways?

Do you think Middletown should enforce the ordinance that requires property owners to clear the walkway?

Four days after the snowfall, many Middletown walkways are still impassable. Although it is the responsibility of the property owner to clear the walkway that abuts their property, residents say the law has been largely ignored by residents. According Middletown Town Ordinance General Regulations 94.01: Do you think Middletown should start fining residents who are out of compliance? Here is what a few people had to say on the Middletown Patch Facebook page.  Kim McNicol Yes! Dig out your mailbox, dig out your hydrant and clear your sidewalks!!! This is not a new concept. Lisaandbrian Guarino Only if the town is held accountable for there actions.. i would like a rebate on my taxes for there lack of effort or there extremely poor planning…

Is this a serious question? The reason that I say that is that the town of Middletown is the biggest offender. We do not do sidewalks. For instance, start at J F Kennedy School on the West Main Road and continue to Lake Erie on Coddington Highway. Nothing is done. Also, in front of Forest Avenue School or even in front of our Town Hall. It is not right, but we think it is fine to take hundreds of…   more ›

Blizzard of 2013: Tell a Neighbor Thank You

Did someone do something nice for you during the storm? Tell them thank you!

"I feel a very unusual sensation -  if it is not indigestion, I think it must be gratitude." - Benjamin Disraeli The lights are on, the snow is melting and services are restored — we weathered (the worst) of the storm.  Not one of us did it alone.  We had National Grid, Red Cross, town employees, volunteers and most importantly, our friends, neighbors and the community.  It is our neighbors who picked up the shovels, pushed our cars out of snow, watched our children or maybe just listened. It is those individuals in our lives that get us through the storms of life, but everyday acts of kindness seldom make the headlines.   Until today.  If someone made this storm easier for you tell them thank you here, in the comment section below. …

A special thanks to any and all volunteers who helped out during the storm. They all did so out of the spirit of helping and none of them asked for overtime. Bravo.   more ›

What do I do about fallen tree limbs and branches?

Information provided by the Town of Middletown

The Department of Public Works will continue to collect tree limbs and branches that have fallen in the town’s right-of-ways. In most cases, the town will need to wait until a significant amount of snow has melted before cleanup is completed. Portsmouth Family Jumps To Safety After Fire Erupts During Blizzard

Four Portsmouth residents - two adults and two children - jumped to their safety Friday night after a fire trapped them inside their Park Avenue home during the height of the storm.

Seven Portsmouth residents are lucky to be alive after a fire broke out outside a Park Avenue home during the height of the 2013 blizzard Friday night.  In what could be described as the worst nightmare for Portsmouth firefighters, a 911 call came in at 11:29 p.m. After a couple hours of lights flickering, most Portsmouth residents lost power for good around 10:30 p.m. Friday.  The 911 call described one of the worst possible scenarios for firefighters. A house was on fire. Seven people were trapped inside.  All Portsmouth fire crews rushed to the fire at 88 Cove St. in Island Park. However, due to blizzard conditions, the response time was delayed.  "It took us 12 minutes to get to the scene. It normally would have taken us four minutes…

Blizzard Response: What Grade Would You Give Middletown?

On a scale from A-F, what grade would you give Middletown?

Friday's blizzard dumped almost two feet of snow on Middletown, which left the roads impassable, knocked down trees and shut off power to all of Aquidneck Island.  The town of Middletown worked to clear the streets and coordinated with National Grid and the Red Cross to set up a regional shelter at Gaudet Middle School for those without heat or power.   Middletown fire and police provided transportation to residents who required shelter.  On an A - F scale, what grade would you give the town through this winter storm?   This relates to plowing, shelter and services. Provide constructive feedback if you give a less than perfect grade.   On the Middletown Patch Facebook page, the town received a wide range of grades and feedback. Becky …

I think they deserve an A for effort. What we have to keep in mind is that the town doesn't have the equipment to deal with a storm of this size. The equipment on hand is meant to deal with our usual winter storms, in order to deal with a storm like this the town would have to have snow removel equipement that would sit idle for 20-30 years until needed. Therefore I think they did their best with…   more ›
