Police are investigating a possible stabbing in downtown Newport late last night, Sgt. John Carlone said Sunday afternoon. "There is an active investigation," Carlone said. "That's all I can say at this time." Carlone said he expects the department will release more information about the incident later this afternoon. Newport suspect was arrested Tuesday night in Bristol and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
The suspect who allegedly stabbed a Middletown man outside an East Main Road convenience store on Monday has been arrested and was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Newport at the Second District Court. Michael F. Daponte, 20, of 63A Malbone Road, Newport, was arrested around 5:47 p.m. Tuesday night by the Bristol Police Department on an outstanding warrant issued for one felony count of assault with a dangerous weapon, according to the Middletown Police Department arrest report. Daponte was later transported to the Middletown Police Station without incident and held overnight pending his arraignment at the Second District Court in Newport Wednesday. A 23-year-old Middletown man was stabbed three times outside a convenience store on Monday.
Middletown Police Department detectives are working to track down a suspect who allegedly stabbed a 23-year-old Middletown man outside a convenience store Monday. Middletown Police Detective Lt. John Dring said police have identified the suspect, based on the victim’s account and interviews from witnesses near the scene of the incident, which took place around 3 p.m. Monday outside the Newport Mart on East Main Road. The victim was stabbed once in the face and twice in the abdomen outside the store and was bleeding when the first police officers arrived on scene, according to Lt. Dring.
