Charles Engle, 40, was the winner of Sunday's Amica Marathon. Engle of Coos Bay, Oregon, completed the scenic 26.2-mile course in 2:36:51 to earn his 124th marathon victory. “I absolutely love to run,” said Engle. “I run about a marathon a week. People think I’m crazy. But I think people that sit on the couch are crazy.” Engle, who works for Marathonguide.com, was pleased overall with his performance. “I was hoping to do about 2:34, 2:35 today, but the wind didn’t allow that,” he said. “I started putting in some pretty good miles. When I was about mile 20 someone said I had it by eight minutes. At 20 (miles) the wind was pretty tough…but I’m not going to say it was everything because we had a good tail win earlier on and that really helped…

“Biggest Loser” contestant Jay Kruger, who lost more than 100 pounds when he participated in the NBC show in 2008, will be among the many endurance athletes slated to compete in the 2011 Amica 19.7 Newport sprint triathlon on Saturday, September 24 in Newport, RI. “It was an awesome race,” said Kruger, who competed in the inaugural Amica 19.7 Newport in 2010. "Newport is a beautiful venue for a race. I can't wait to compete against a group of athletes that love triathlons as much as I do!" The Amica 19.7 Newport will be Kruger’s seventh and final triathlon of the 2011 season. He also competed in the Amica 19.7 Boston in August. More than 430 contestants showed up for the event on Sachuest Point Saturday. Local Portsmouth Resident Shawn Connel-Clarkson was the top finisher among women.
Dangerous surf and rip currents forced race organizers to cancel the swim leg of competition on Sachuest Point, but a modified version adding a second foot race to the inaugural Amica 19.7 Newport Triathlon meant the entirely land-based event still went on Saturday. More than 430 international contestants took part in Saturday's inaugural Amica 19.7 Newport Triathlon Series held primarily on and around Sachuest Point in Middletown, with part of the cycling course in Portsmouth. While many participants were experienced and professionals, race organizers recognized that a good number were competing at an amateur level and others were new to triathlon competition, so when high winds, rough swells and dangerous rip currents confronted them …

Former Class of '96 Middletown High School alum Rudy Pauls, along with fellow "Biggest Loser" alum Jay Kruger of New Bedford, MA, are among the competitors in Saturday's first annual "Amica 19.7 Newport Triathlon" in Middletown and Portsmouth.
A new triathlon comes to Middletown this weekend, with some high profile names among the list of competitors. Among the entrants to the first annual Amica 19.7 Newport Triathlon on Saturday, Sept. 25, is Season 8 "Biggest Loser" finalist Rudy Pauls, 31, of Brooklyn, CT, who grew up in Little Compton and attended Middletown High School. As a reality TV contestant, Pauls proved himself as a serious competitor by starting out at 422 pounds and breaking a new weight loss TV show record for the greatest single season weight loss—234 pounds—before season winner Danny Cahill moments later hit the scale and posted a 239-pound total season loss that crowned him the winner. Still, Pauls continues to claim another show record for having lost the most…
