Middletown Police Bust Underage Party at Hotel

The following incident was reported by the Middletown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

On Monday, Feb. 11 around 2:31 a.m., Middletown police responded to the Ramada Inn at 425 East Main Road to what they later discovered was a small, underage party. Police issued four citations for underage drinking and one social host violation. When police arrived on-scene, the manager said a loud, intoxicated group was in room 310.  The manager alleged he told the group to quiet down, but they refused to open the door and continued to disrupt guests. Police announced their presence and knocked on the door, but they were not allowed access. The manager opened the door for police. Middletown Among Other RI Towns Receive $1.1 Million to Combat Youth Substance Abuse

Programs in Barrington, Chariho, Middletown, Narragansett, North Kingstown, Providence, Smithfield, Tiverton and Woonsocket are receiving federal grants to combat youth substance abuse.

  Nine Rhode Island community coalitions are getting a collective $1.1 million boost in grants to help combat youth substance abuse, including North Kingstown's substance abuse task force – Working Together for Wellness. Rhode Island's Congressional delegation announced that task forces in Barrington, Chariho, Middletown, Narragansett, North Kingstown, Providence, Smithfield and Woonsocket will be receiving $1,122,062 in grants from the Drug-Free Communities Support Program. The grants are used to "strengthen partnerships among community organizations, parents, youth, schools, health care and business professionals and law enforcement.  The grant will be split amongst nine prevention coalitions/task forces across the state that work to …

Police Break Up Party, Girl Found at House After Extensive Search

  The following incident was reported by the Middletown Police Department.  If you have a different account, please feel free to share in the comments: When police broke up a party at 468 Purgatory Road late last night, the Middletown Police and Fire Departments conducted a search for a girl that had reportedly fled from the scene.   After looking for the girl with personnel and equipment such as night goggles and thermal imaging, she was found hiding at the house.  Around 11:27 p.m. Tuesday night, police responded to Purgatory Road for a complaint of a loud party.  Police said the individuals at the house were under-21 and most appeared to be intoxicated.    Police said three teenage girls were instructed to sit down on the porch, but two…

How Can Parents Prevent Underage Drinking?

Parenting can be a challenge. What advice can you give parents who find their underage children drinking?

Last week, underage parties were at the forefront of both local and statewide news. Last Wednesday, 18 year-old Caleb Chafee, the son of Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, was charged with violating the social host law after he held a graduation party in Exeter on May 28.  On that same day, 18 year-old Kaylin Maddox was cited with Middletown’s social host ordinance after police broke-up a party that involved underage drinking.   A common reaction to both stories, both locally and statewide, was that parents should be held accountable for their children's behavior. “I hate to point the finger but teaching these kids respect falls in the parents lap,” said a Patch reader with the alias of Cheese Ball. Nancy, The original story did state Kaylin told police the party had escalated as a result of social media as well how she was injured. Police Log: Salve Students Cited For Underage Drinking, 2 Taken to Hopsital

The following arrests were reported by the Middletown Police Department. The arrests do not imply a conviction.

Thirteen Salve Regina University students were issued citations for underage drinking on Sunday morning around 1:45 a.m when Middletown Police responded to a party at 101 A Briarwood Ave. The Middletown Fire Department took 20-year-old Brianna Ottati, who lives at the home, to Newport Hospital after police reportedly could not wake her up. Margaret Jones, 19, was also transported to Newport Hospital because police said she had difficulty functioning function and she allegedly recorded a .206 on a Breathalyzer exam. Police later responded to the hospital to issue Ottati a violation of the municipal social host ordinance.     Driving Under the Influence Michael Potter, of 205 Immokolee Drive, Portsmouth was arrested on Friday at 10:40 p.m. …
