Governor Lincoln Chafee has declared Friday, December 21, 2012 – the one-week anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT – a "Day of Mourning" in the State of Rhode Island. To honor the memory of the 26 victims who lost their lives in the shootings, the Governor has also called for a statewide moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. on that day and has asked that buildings, which have the ability, ring bells 26 times during that moment in honor of each life that was taken. "The past week has been one of great pain for the community of Newtown, the State of Connecticut, and our country as a whole," Governor Chafee said. The governor also says local tourism councils should share a message about the state.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee said he doesn’t believe that the higher state beach fees that went into effect July 1 will hurt tourism this summer. The governor spoke as part of a roundtable discussion with Patch staffers held on June 23 at the State House. “The beach fee increases still keep us lower than some of the town beaches,” Chafee explained, “and that hasn’t discouraged the town beaches from being used.” Beginning this Friday, the cost for season passes for Rhode Island residents will double to $60; weekday parking will go up from $6 to $10, weekend fees from $7 to $14. Out-of-state visitors will pay $20 for weekday parking (up from the current $12 fee) and $28 for weekends (previously $14), with the charge for non-resident season passes …

Despite exemption that "eviscerates" "important rights," governor OKs law.
Governor Lincoln Chafee signed H 6103, "An Act Related to Domestic Relations – Civil Unions” into law Saturday morning, though he says it fails to provide equal rights to all citizens. Chafee wrote in his signing statement that although the law permits officials to certify people in civil unions, it also "provides a religious exemption of unparalleled and alarming scope." The exemption in question is under § 15-3.1-5(a)(3) of the law: "No religious organization or its employees may be required “to treat as valid any civil union.” That exemption, "gives these institutions and their employees the choice of refusing to recognize civil unions.
