I couldn't agree with you more. And he's also the same guy that tried to give out big pay raises to Middletown personnel on his way out the door the last time he was on the council. But he's back and we're stuck with him for another 2 years.   more ›

Reilly Remains Optimistic, Finn Leads by 87 Votes

The final results are expected this afternoon.

[update Wed 4:00 p.m.: The Board of Elections has announced results from the absentee ballots will not be made available until Thursday afternoon] As the Board of Elections tallies the absentee ballots today, incumbent State House of Representatives candidate Dan Reilly, District 72 (Middletown, Portsmouth), remains optimistic about the race. “At this point, I am anxiously awaiting the results of the mail ballots, which I do believe will make this race even closer, if not successful for me,” said Reilly. Although challenger Linda Finn of Middletown leads by 87 votes, the absentee ballots are still outstanding. Between the two towns, over 1700 voters requested a mail-in ballot. The Board of Elections said an official count will be available…

Residents Complain About Long Wait Times at Polls

Some reported waits as long as two hours to vote

Throughout the day, many Middletown residents have complained about long wait periods at the polling stations. Some poll workers reported residents found the ballots confusing to understand. At Gaudet Middletown School, candidate Linda Finn said residents had to wait over two hours and that many walked out without casting their vote.  State Senator Louis DiPalma said the problem needs to be addressed. "It was way too long," said DiPalma. He said the issue is a combination of a large voter turnout along with the larger precincts with fewer polling stations.   Legislation was passed at the request of the town clerks to increase the size of the precincts. "We need to revisit that," said DiPalma. On Facebook, Niko Merritt said that some …

Waited almost two hours at Gaudet, and saw some people leave. The problem was not in filling out the ballots, since at any given time about a third of the ballot stations were empty, as people waited on line, waiting to be validated and given a ballot. My guess is that changed ID procedures had not been adequately explained to the poll workers at the table, who often looked unsure of how to …   more ›

Patch's Poll: Will Tonight's Presidential Debate Influence Your Vote?

Some say the Denver debate between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama could change the campaigns.

The much-anticipated debate between Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat Barack Obama will air tonight and pundits on both sides of the political aisle have spent the last few days breathlessly pontificating on how the debate can reshape the campaigns. For the local schedule and guide to the presidental debate, click here Some say Romney is seeking to downplay his performance in the debate and its outcome in an attempt to lower expectations of the GOP candidate’s face-off with President Obama. Doing so means that if Romney does better than expected, it increases his chances of being declared the winner. Romney supporters are hoping the debate will help reshape and reboot his campaign, which has taken numerous hits in recent weeks for …

Letter: Rep. Reilly Says Chafee Left Residents With More Questions Than Answers

Reilly responds to Governor's visit to Newport County

Dear Editor, The Governor’s recent visit to Portsmouth to discuss how the state can help businesses grow was unsurprisingly concerned mostly with the Governor’s plan to place tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge. Unfortunately for those in attendance, I feel that the visit left us with more questions than answers. The Governor and his Director of Transportation, Michael Lewis, explained some of the reasoning behind the Governor’s decision to put tolls on the bridge, authorized by this current year’s budget. However, I am still confused as to why a statewide transportation financing problem must be solved by placing such a heavy burden on local area residents and businesses. Director Lewis stated that, without changes, the largest bridges in …

Poll: Will You Vote to Approve Fire Station Renovations?

Voters will be asked to approve a $7.5 million bond referendum this November.

This November, voters will be asked to approve a $7.5 million bond referendum to fund the renovation and improvements to the Middletown Fire Station on Wyatt Road.  Yesterday, Friends of Middletown Fire Station, a collaboration organized to educate residents about the proposal, urged residents to approve the referendum. "An essential part of Middletown’s long-term capital improvement plan, this project will correct major deficiencies that exist at the current Middletown fire station facility,"  they wrote in a post on Patch. According to the town administration, the project will not raise taxes. The proposal will pull funds from income it receives annually from a Navy housing contract. Take our Patch Poll: Will you vote "yes" on Question 8…
